The Wales Cancer Network developed a set of standards to provide a foundation for the development of high-quality services for people with cancer, either known, or yet to be diagnosed, who present acutely to the NHS.

These standards for acute oncology build on the current chemotherapy standards integral to the National Cancer Standards for Wales.

Implementation of the standards are subject to an all Wales peer review as part of the quality assurance process.

The standards in Wales have been developed to address the concerns and recommendation raised in key national reports and are similar to the standards used in both England and Northern Ireland

AO dataset work – AO teams in conjunction with NWIS and the WCN have been developing a National AO dataset. The Core Dataset Working Group has agreed a minimum core dataset for Wales which is being built into the new Canisc (Electronic Wales Cancer Information).

Velindre Cancer Centre developed the Acute Oncology Support App which provides staff across the NHS with instant access to emergency cancer treatment protocols via their smart phones.

The app helps clinical teams assess cancer patients who attend hospitals or other clinical settings with unexpected complications or side effects from their cancer treatment.

The App allows any health care professional to quickly access short, clear guidelines which will help ensure patients receive the right care as quickly as possible. The App - based on UK national guidelines and developed by Velindre Cancer Centre and cancer teams across Wales – was funded by Velindre Charitable Funds.

It is free to download now on iOS and Android devices – just search for “Acute Oncology Support”.  Click here for further information
